SOC TRANG’S PIA CAKE

The main producing area of pia cake is in Vung Thom, today is Phu Tan Commune, My Tu District. Since the seventeenth century, Pia cake appeared in Soc Trang, following the footsteps of Han Chinese migrants to the South. Mr. Chen was one of the first migrants and initiated the making of pia cake for sale. In the past, pia skin was made from wheat flour. The cake had many layers and it was crispy when baked. It was stuffed with beans, sugar, and salted daikon. All the steps were done by hand. Over time, pia cake is gradually processed in accordance with the taste of Vietnamese people by taking advantage of abundant raw materials, aromatic herbs in the southern region; the cake is stuffed with fatty meat, salted egg, durian, etc. Today, pia cake has become a famous specialty throughout the country and exported to foreign countries.
